<image:caption>This exhibition draws from the work of artists, scientists and scholars who first met while attending five-day experimental workshops in 2010 and 2012. Similar to the workshops, this exhibition takes an experimental approach bringing together an interdisciplinary group from around the United States and Canada to push against traditional boundaries. Taking divergent approaches these artists examine the complexities of how we engage our environments and the resulting social, political and ecological implications of how one constructs meaning. Leading up to the exhibition, a series of mini-workshops took place at Lafayette College focused on the topic of “ecotone.” During the workshops undergraduate students worked alongside Mapping Meaning artists and scholars to explore current transitions in climate and technology and create site-specific work that is included in this exhibition. Participating Artists: Karina Aguilera Skvirsky Nat Castañeda Vasia Markides Krista Caballero Trudi Lynn Smith Carmina Sánchez-del-Valle THINK AGAIN (S.A. Necessities for any survival kit, mirrors are carried for both military and civilian use while in wilderness environments. In an emergency situation flashes of sunlight signal distress and have the ability to communicate across great distance. Depending upon weather conditions these flashes can be visible up to 50 miles away with the record rescue being 105 miles. Rather than tell tales from the future, this bipedal, hermaphroditic life form reminisces by singing a song/bolero—“Miseria”—by Los Panchos (1949). “Miseria” was peformed in Spanish, while subtitles and abstract landscapes rolled across the embedded screen in the time traveler’s chest. Rather than try to represent the unimaginable I donned a second-skin like costume evocative of low budget science fiction films from the past. I performed the Bolero three times singing the song with a different emotional projection—anger, sadness and fear—in a row."</image:caption>

The tent structure is a lightproof environment that projects an image of the outside view onto the back wall of the tent with a simple lens. First positioned in the exact location of popular photographic views in Waterton Lakes National Park, Canada in summer 2009, participants enter the tent to see the landscape projected onto the wall of the structure. The work is also about guiding participants on epic journeys: the camera is a portable structure, for hauling on expedition style journeys into the backcountry of parks and protected areas.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hello/Hola First edition 2002, 2nd edition 2012 Offset Postcard campaign and installation Hello/Hola links the rape and murder of over 370 unidentified women in Ciudad Juarez (and Chihuahua) to the structural effects of NAFTA and intergovernmental relations between the USA and Mexico. It connects the flow of international capital and multinational corporations search for cheap labor to the flow of women’s lives. Many of the victims in Ciudad Juarez were maquiladora (factory) employees and many remain unidentified. Hello/Hola acknowledges the lost identities of these women. It uses the recurring blank nametag, manufactured by Avery, one of the maquiladoras operating in Juarez. The color blue references the factory worker’s uniforms, as well as “black and blue” bruises. More than half of the murders in Juarez were prompted by motives of domestic violence, robbery and gang wars, while a more than a third involved sexual assault. Gender-based violence is the most crucial public health crisis for women across the globe. Women are more likely to be injured or die from male violence than from cancer, accidents, and war combined. In 2010, the United Nations created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. This was a historic step in accelerating the organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. PLEASE SEND A PRE-ADDRESSED POSTCARD TO UN WOMEN AND VOICE YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hidden in the Sand 2008 Experimental Documentary (video still) 32:24 In 1974, a coup backed by the Greek military junta instigated Turkey to invade the nation of Cyprus. They captured almost 40% of the island and displaced its residents, both Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot. Varosha, which was once a tourist district in the city of Famagusta on the east coast of Cyprus, was occupied and all its Greek-Cypriot residents fled their homes. Since then, Varosha has been encircled by barbed wire and kept under strict surveillance by the Turkish military, which uses the territory as a bargaining chip in negotiations with the Cyprus government. Its citizens are still forbidden to return. Over the last 39 years, Varosha went from being "Cyprus's Riviera", to a dilapidated ghost city; its former inhabitants watch their houses decay from outside the barricades. Within Varosha's limits rare sea turtles nest on the beaches, bougainvilleas overtake deteriorating homes, and wild asparagus and prickly pear plants run rampant. As both the maker and a participant, the filmmaker examines the fate of this city in captivity and her family's connection to it. A follow-up to Hidden in the Sand is the documentary, The Famagusta Ecocity Project (currently in production), about a rapidly growing movement in Cyprus to transform Famagusta into Europe's model Ecocity and center for conflict mediation (more at www.ecocityproject.com).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sylvia Torti and Linda Wiener The Challenge of Scale If ‘land is the text’ how do we read our surrounding and create meaning around a place that is multidimensional? Our exercise is a response to that question and is intended to enable non-specialists to see the world through an ecological lens, to move outside their comfort zones, learn new techniques, and teach others what they have learned. <image:caption>In this session Mapping Meaning participants discussed the history of native ecologies and then went on an exploration to identify and collect edible plants of the Colorado Plateau. This culminated with a culinary experience connecting participants to food practices that exist outside of industrial agricultural systems and offering another lens for how we approach social and environmental ecologies. http://www.desertartlab.com Photo: Trudi Lynn Smith</image:caption>

<image:caption>In this session participants hiked the Cave Springs Trail in the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park. This scenic area includes several important cultural and archaeological sites such as a historic cowboy camp with an open-air cooking area as well as Ancestral Pueblo pictographs. During this cultural blitz participants were introduced to regional issues relating to intersections and conflicts between cowboy, Native American and government (National Park) cultures. </image:caption>

Kodak put signs at the entrances of many towns listing what to photograph. <image:caption>A camera obscura is a lightproof room with a small hole or simple lens on one side that projects the world outside, inside onto the walls of the room. Viewers enter the tent to see the view and participate in that photographic moment. Slightly removed from the outside world, but still a part of it – sounds permeate through the tent walls, there is ground under foot, and the breeze stirs the image projecting on the wall – the setting providing ideal ground to think about technology, representation, and viewing as well as the notions of in between or otherwise, liminal spaces and ecotones. <image:caption>A time traveler, nostalgic for a pre-apocalyptic present, lands in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. Rather than tell tales from the future, this bipedal, hermaphroditic life form reminisces by singing a song—“Miseria”—by Los Panchos (1949). The song will be sung in its native Spanish, while subtitles and abstract landscapes roll across the embedded screen in the time traveler’s chest. Rather than try to represent the unimaginable I will don a second-skin like costume evocative of low budget science fiction films from the past.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A large printed map covering a one-mile radius area, using the field station as the center, was provided the first day of the workshop. In an urban setting a mile corresponds to a twenty-minute walk. Participants were asked to draw, doodle, and write on the map defining the spaces and places they visited during Mapping Meaning. The intent was to coalesce into one map the different paths, perspectives, and levels of engagement with the earth. The collaborative mapping effort requires challenging the representational conventions developed for the built environment. In the end we recognize we are always in the map of our own making.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Her maps of the ocean floor have been called “one of the most remarkable achievements in modern cartography”, yet no one knows her name. This session will be part presentation and part discussion, beginning with a short talk on Marie Tharp and how my own outsider status (as a creative writer looking at the history and culture of science) allowed me to make new conclusions about the import of Tharp’s work and the extent to which it influenced the practice of Earth science in the second half of the twentieth century. We will end with a group discussion about how being a non-expert—or even being ignorant—at the beginning of a project can often lead to exciting discoveries and conclusions. Photo: Melissa K. <image:caption>Necessities for any survival kit, mirrors are carried for both military and civilian use while in wilderness environments. In an emergency situation flashes of sunlight signal distress and have the ability to communicate across great distance. Depending upon weather conditions these flashes can be visible up to 50 miles away with the record rescue being 105 miles. These particular signal mirrors were collected from a variety of online sites and included everything from WWII military issued mirrors to wilderness survival and campfire mirrors. This session took an experimental approach -- exploring through discussion and collaborative action the constant state of emergency we find ourselves negotiating. Participants were introduced to basic signaling techniques as well as emergency Morse Code. Then, through group performance, these mirrors were employed to create our own early warning signals, exploring together ideas around agency, survival, and change.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mapping Meaning: 2012 - Jen Richter: From Fukushima to New Mexico</image:title>
<image:caption>Lessons from a Nuclear Disaster On March 11, 2011, a 9.5 magnitude earthquake in the Pacific triggered a tsunami that swept the Eastern coast of Japan. One of the hardest hit areas was the Fukushima prefecture, which contained two nuclear power plants. The plant that was hardest hit was the Fukushima Daiichi plant, which was quickly swamped by towering waves that submerged the base of the plant. This natural event set in motion a nuclear disaster that draws into question the security, engineering, and human elements of implementing and using nuclear technologies in modern society. This session will examine the ways that nature and science interacted in the aftermath of the Tohoku earthquake. Responses to Fukushima on several different levels, from industry, government, and the public on local, national, and international levels, reveal the tenuous control over nuclear technologies that exists today. Looking at the solutions devised for containing and tracing the radiation that emitted from the plant, which include elderly scientists willing to sacrifice themselves, and wild monkeys armed with dosimeters, demonstrates how the most high-tech solutions for providing energy can result in the most desperate and low-tech methods. These methods show the primary weaknesses in discourses that make nuclear energy a necessary part of any modern energy supply, and upset rhetorics that call for increased usage of nuclear power. They also draw into question recent efforts in the U.S., specifically in New Mexico, to increase and build new nuclear facilities.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Artistic Expression In Animals & Mapping Natural Ecotones This session was led by Dr. Sylvia Torti (biology) and Dr. Linda Wiener (entomology). Linda began by sharing ideas and visuals about artistic expression in animals, including house building and aesthetics. Her recent work bridges the often taboo subject of “anthropomorphism.” After this discussion, Sylvia provided a context for how ecologists consider ecotone, the theme of the 2012 Mapping Meaning workshop. The entire group then went out to explore, identify, and map the ant homes / ecotones at Capitol Reef National Park. </image:caption>

<image:title>Mapping Meaning: 2012 - Trudi Lynn Smith: Portable Camera Obscura</image:title>
</image:caption>

<image:title>Mapping Meaning: 2012 - Emily and Vasia Markides: The Famagusta Ecocity Project</image:title>
<image:caption>This interdisciplinary project aims to turn the ghost town of Varosha and the surrounding city of Famagusta, Cyprus into a model ecocity. Since 1974 this six square kilometer district has been fenced off from the rest of the island by barbed wire due to conflict. Throughout the week at Mapping Meaning, Vasia will be filming her mother, thus launching the production for her documentary film about Emily’s life and vision. http://ecocityproject.com/ Photo: Melissa K. <image:caption>Year: 2012 Length: 30” This performance took place at the 2012 Mapping Meaning workshop. Participants were introduced to basic signaling techniques as well as emergency Morse code. This culminated with the entire group performing together using signal mirrors to explore through collaborative action the constant state of emergency we find ourselves negotiating. Depending upon weather conditions flashes can be visible up to 50 miles away with the record rescue being 105 miles. These particular signal mirrors were collected from a variety of online sites and included everything from WWII military issued mirrors to wilderness survival and campfire mirrors. https://vimeo.com/61735148</image:caption>

<image:title>Mapping Meaning: 2016 - Mapping Modernity: Images of nature, nation, and microbes in the mid-20th century</image:title>
<image:caption>Melanie Armstrong This session engages the group in an analysis of a photograph that eerily evokes the 1918 photograph that inspired the Mapping Meaning gathering. This image was taken a generation later, in 1956, in the midst of the 20th-century pursuit of modernity, and depicts a field trial at Porton Down, Great Britain’s science and military park. Masked figures stand together in a field, before or after a weapons test, posing for a camera to document the work they were doing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Each presenter at Mapping Meaning was given a corresponding piece of cartridge paper. All participants were then invited to use this space to document responses to the presentations. Some questions that framed these maker-breaks: How might working at a table with others lead to casual conversation, silent workflow together, hybrid outcomes? How might working alongside others change the subject, create new edges and shapes for emergent knowledge? What can sketches do that text can’t? This process was adapted from the work of the Ethnographic Terminalia Collective (http://ethnographicterminalia.org/) and facilitated by Trudi Lynn Smith </image:caption>

<image:caption>Rosalind Murray “When I walk the green path sandwiched between a stream and an endless flow, we are interchangeable, the river, the land, and I. In this place of communion, being of it, it being of me, our boundaries present yet fluid, I frame my artwork. Mapping exists and does not; the two sides of my hippocampus are stimulated, one to find a way in the outside world, the other locating internally as my own consciousness. How can this process unfold within a dominant world policing boundaries between self and outside to the point of destruction?”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Annita Lucchesi “This interactive workshop will be an opportunity to learn and engage in narrative mapping, by utilizing cartography as a medium with which to grapple with understanding of place, connection to land, and representational practices in conveying land-based knowledge and stories. Participants will then work in mapping exercises that allow them to utilize their own skills, personal experiences, and narratives to create a collection of maps reflecting on the land and space we occupy. These exercises will provide an interdisciplinary space to share technical and artistic skills, scholarly considerations, and engagements with the land, and collectively experiment with new means of conveying such explorations.”</image:caption>

This scenic area includes several important cultural and archaeological sites such as a historic cowboy camp with an open-air cooking area as well as Ancestral Pueblo pictographs. During this cultural blitz participants were introduced to regional issues relating to intersections and conflicts between cowboy, Native American and government (National Park) cultures.</image:caption>
